accidents it would, in present circumstances, be difficult to
explain why the safety provisions of the Regulations were not being
enforced.
In these matters I accordingly agree with the Interim
Mining Policy Committee, that an Inspector of Mines and appropriate
subordinato staff should be appointed at the earliest possible
date and attached to the Public Works or other suitable Department.
Applications to mine various minerals (e.g. wolfram,
galena, ochre, China-clay) have long been outstanding.
Applicants have recently boen informed that their requests cannot
at presont be granted, but that it may be possible to re-open the
question in about April, 1949. It is important that legitimate
mining should be actively encouraged, and that carly steps be
taken to enable this development to proceed.
